Q&A

How long does a lesson last?

A typical lesson lasts 30 minutes. We occasionally offer 1 hour lessons but prices vary accordingly.

What ages do you teach?

Absolutely any!

What would be involved in a normal lesson?

A ‘normal lesson’ is different for every student in each subject depending on what you are hoping to achieve. However, generally speaking we aim to include a warm-up of scales or basic exercises, work on 2-3 pieces often looking at technique, and elements of music theory related to those pieces.

What teaching methods do you use?

Teaching methods differ depending on the subject, and according to each pupil’s needs and requirements. However, all teaching methods ensure that the basics for the subject are correct and used confidently.

What styles of music do you teach?

We have an extensive library of books and backing tracks, particularly for our vocal students, covering most styles of music. However, we are always open to input from our students, so if you would like to bring your own music or have other suggestions, we will do our best to track down and provide your requests.

Who can benefit from music lessons?

Everyone! The therapeutic qualities of music have long been recognised, even for people suffering from the most acute medical problems. So whether you’re looking for a great way to relax for half an hour or you want to develop a new skill- music is for you!

Do you offer group lessons?

Group lessons are great fun for learning to work in harmony as a team or choir, and yes we can offer this service if you wish. However, we feel each individual is unique and it can therefore be difficult to provide adequate attention to the differing needs of everyone when in a group situation- it all depends on what you’re looking to achieve from your music lessons.

Do you offer exams?

Yes; we are supported by Victoria College of Music. Examinations are held at our City Centre location above Jack White Music on St. Benedicts Street, and due to the vast quantity of entrants, we are lucky enough to have the examiners visit us!

Do I have to take exams?

No. Although we encourage students to take exams there is absolutely no pressure to enter if you do not wish to do so. We do emphasise the experience of preparing for exams, therefore even if you do not wish to take the actual exam, we suggest you attempt the work necessary to practice the structure and techniques involved. This also allows you to gage your achievements and state what sort of level you are working at.

Do you ever produce shows?

Yes we do. We aim to produce a show every couple of years, and no two shows are ever the same! Most recently we put on a Christmas Extravaganza, and students also took part in ‘Somethin Xtra’, our own take on a popular talent contest!

Where are lessons held?

Lessons for all subjects are held in three locations:
Norwich City Centre- Above Jack White Music on St. Benedicts Street
Horsford- Horsford Methodist Church on Holt Road.
Aylsham - Jubilee Family Centre, Norwich Road
